February is Heart Month

February is known as Heart Month.  We celebrate the advances that have been made in cardiac and vascular medicine and reflect on the work that is yet to be done.  Heart disease and stroke continue to be the #1 and #3 killers of Americans.

Heart Month is also a call to action.  Our heart beats an average of 100,000 times a day.  Day in and day out.  We need to make sure we are doing all we can to keep our hearts beating and healthy.  Know your numbers: blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose and ejection fraction.  Know your risk factors and make the choice to change the ones you can.

February 1st was the fifth anniversary of National Go Red Day. Every year the first Friday in February is the day to wear your favorite red clothes or accessory to show your support for women and the fight against heart disease.  Why red?  Because red is the color of passion, power, strength and energy.

Everyone is encouraged to visit the American Heart Associations web site.  They have current information, education, recipes, and a risk assessment quiz.
