Images That Truly Capture the Heart...

What is a HeartScan?

This is a screening test and takes less than 30 minutes. A HeartScan is non-invasive, painless and could save your life. A coronary artery calcification score measures the volume and distribution of calcification in the arteries of the heart.

Calcified plaque indicates an increased risk for coronary disease. Because there may be no symptoms of coronary disease until it is too late, early awareness and treatment is essential.

Up to 50% of people with heart disease have no symptoms. Their first sign is a heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest.

You don't need to do anything special to prepare for your HeartScan; you don't even need to undress although a loose fitting shirt or blouse should be worn.

Because this is screening, insurances will not pay for it. Cash, check or credit card accepted at time of appointment.

Who is at risk and should consider a HeartScan?

Prime candidates for a HeartScan are people with at least 2 risk factors:

  • Men over 40
  • Men with a waist measurement over 40 inches
  • Women over 50 or post-menopausal
  • Women with a waist measurement over 35 inches
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Smoke or exposed to second-hand smoke
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Inactive lifestyle

This picture (Coronary CT Angiography) is a beating heart taken with the 64-slice scanner. Contrast is given to show 'soft' and hard plaque in the coronary arteries.

What is CT Angiography?

Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) is a great diagnostic tool for physicians. Until now, plaque development and blockage in any artery could only be done by an invasive angiogram, which requires working directly inside artery vessels with catheters, carrying potential risks and time spent in the hospital.

CT scanners have evolved to state-of-the-art 64-slice scanners. Thin, credit-card slice pictures are taken in a few seconds and are assembled into 3-D images. With these images soft (non-calcified), as well as calcified or hard plaque, can be detected. Narrowing or stenosis of the artery can also be seen.

At NEOCS, we have added the latest CT technology to our range of diagnostic services to bring cardiac patient s the most advanced imaging in healthcare. With Coronary CT Angiography (CCTA) we can clearly visualize cardiac anatomy and coronary arteries similar to a cardiac catheterization–only non-invasively and within 5 heart beats.

CT Angiography is a convenient and non-invasive test that obtains high-quality, fast imaging of arteries. This scanner allows NEOCS cardiologists the ability to look inside your body and see blood flow and potential blockage in the heart, carotids, chest, kidneys, as well as arteries in the arms and legs.

CT Angiography is an ideal outpatient procedure, only requiring that an IV be placed and intravenous contrast be given. When the contract is injected you may feel warm, but the test should not be painful at any time.

Most scans can be completed within 30 minutes, including preparation time and brief observation afterward.

The 64 slice CT scanner delivers sub-millimeter resolution images, showing even the smallest vessels. This allows our specialists to quickly and accurately diagnose patients. We can freeze the motion of the heart, producing crystal-clear images to help give physicians the confidence needed to determine the best course of treatment.
