Life-Saving Test for Patients
NEOCS is actively screening patients for Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), also known as atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteris. This is a condition in which fatty deposits (called plaque) builds up along the walls of arteries. Any artery may be affected and people with PAD are at much greater risk for strokes and heart attacks.

A simple screening test called the Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) is done in the office and takes 20 to 30 minutes. Blood pressure measurements are taken in the arms and ankles using an ultrasound device called a Doppler. A difference in the pressures can indicate a blockage in the lower leg arteries.

Dr. Pietrolungo states "Patients with advanced PAD are usually very high risk. By identifying PAD in its early stages with this simple test, we can develop the right treatment and perhaps have a positive outcome".

The most common symptom of PAD is pain in the leg muscles when walking and the pain is relieved with rest. Discomfort can be felt in the hips, thighs, or calves and is often thought to be arthritis or 'old age'.

According to the American Heart Association, PAD affects 8-12 million Americans and becomes more common as we age. Unfortunately, the symptoms or warning signs often go overlooked and undetected until the disease has advanced. The earlier PAD is found, the easier the treatment and the better the outcome.
